“The love between Dilbər and Müshfiq was truly the love of Leyli and Majnun. I would even say that it was superior to that love. Müshfiq’s endless love for Dilbər Khanum had turned him into a true prisoner of love, in the real sense of the word. You know that after Müshfiq’s imprisonment, Dilbər Khanum was also exiled. The one-day suffering Dilbər Khanum endured in exile because of Müshfiq was equivalent to a hundred. If any woman had endured that suffering, she probably would not have been able to bear it. She had already lost her mind; she reached the level of madness. Ahmed Javad’s wife, Shukriya Khanum, witnessed all this. The witnesses said that they heard her suffering and screams.”

This was stated to Medianews.az by Mikayil Müshfiq’s close relative, his uncle’s granddaughter Reyhanə Ismayilzada.

She responded to those who blamed Dilbər Akhundzade after Mikayil Müshfiq’s death:

“Many say that if Dilbər had loved Müshfiq, she would have remained faithful to her love and would not have married someone else. No, that was not the case. After she healed to a certain extent, the doctor recommended that she start a family life. From the marriage of Dilbər Khanum and Müshfiq, a child named Yalçın was born. For some reason, the child passed away at the age of 8 months. This had a very heavy impact on both Müshfiq and Dilbər Khanum. Back then, medicine had not advanced. If it had been today, the child could have been saved. From Dilbər Khanum’s second marriage, a son was also born, but he too died at the age of 1. After that, Leyla Akhundzade and her son Fikrət were born. Fikrət died at about the age of 50; he did not live long. Nowadays, our women are very free. They can start a family whenever they want and can live independently whenever they want. But it was not like that back then. According to the requirements of the time, Dilbər Khanum had to start a family life, and she did. We never viewed that negatively. Müshfiq praised Dilbər in most of his poems. But he also has other poems that raise the question whether they are about this Dilbər or not?! Most of his poems are about women. He has poems on other topics as well. Müshfiq was destroyed by one sentence.”

Reyhanə Khanum said that she had a very good relationship with Dilbər Khanum:

“Dilbər Khanum had a very good relationship with us. Müshfiq’s sister Balacaxanım’s health was very critical. She could not wake up for days. We thought among ourselves that maybe she wanted Dilbər? We went and brought Dilbər Khanum from her home. After our aunt Balacaxanım, the last legacy from Müshfiq, saw Dilbər Khanum, she passed away. Dilbər Khanum raised her children in the spirit of Müshfiq. She only told us about her love for Müshfiq and about her children’s deaths. We were children, after all. She said that the children’s deaths nearly destroyed Müshfiq. These are the things we remember. Also, Dilbər Khanum spoke very emotionally about the day Müshfiq was arrested. Müshfiq was arrested on June 4, 1937, one day before his birthday. He was sentenced to 6 months, his nails were pulled out, and he was subjected to unimaginable tortures. On January 6, 1938, he was executed by firing squad. May God have mercy on both of them.”
