Fruits and vegetables that can reduce the effect of medications ANNOUNCED

Although some fruits and vegetables are considered beneficial, in certain cases they can alter or weaken the effect of medications. Experts state that such interactions directly affect the absorption of the drug and the mechanism of its action in the body.

Medianews.az reports, citing Foodinfo.az, that according to chemist A. Panov, the mineral substances, vitamins, antioxidants, and other biologically active compounds present in fruits and vegetables may interact with certain medications. This can lead to both a decrease in effectiveness and the emergence of additional side effects.

Especially, the substances contained in grapefruit can weaken the activity of enzymes involved in the breakdown of many drugs. In this case, the concentration of the drug in the blood can increase and the risk of side effects may rise. Bananas, due to their high potassium content, can cause excessive potassium increase in the body when taken together with potassium-sparing medications. This condition can cause heart rhythm disturbances and muscle weakness; the risk is particularly higher for individuals with kidney disease.

Citrus fruits, especially those rich in vitamin C, can affect the absorption of some antibiotics and iron supplements. Excessive consumption can sometimes lead to undesirable results.

Experts emphasize that when taking any medication, it is important to consult a doctor regarding nutrition-related issues. Obtaining proper advice considering individual health conditions can prevent potential risks.
