The championship, which has been held since June 11 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, features 48 teams. The teams are divided into 12 groups. The top two teams in each group and the 8 best third-placed teams will earn a ticket to the round of 16.
When points are equal, the result of the match between the teams is taken as the primary criterion. The remaining criteria are: goal difference, number of goals scored, least official warnings (yellow and red cards), and the team's current position in the FIFA ranking.
The group stage ends on June 28. The round of 16 is scheduled for June 28-July 4, the round of 8 for July 4-7, the quarterfinals for July 9-12, the semifinals for July 14-15, and the third-place match and final for July 19.
