Today, the official opening ceremony of the "Khizi-Absheron" Wind Power Plant with a capacity of 240 MW was held.
This is Azerbaijan's first wind power plant with large capacity. Prior to this, the largest alternative energy source plant in Azerbaijan was the solar power plant with a capacity of 230 MW built by the UAE's "Masdar" company in Garadagh, which was inaugurated in October 2023.
Both plants were realized without using state funds.
The investor in the "Khizi-Absheron" plant is the Saudi Arabian company "ACWA Power".
Approximately $340 million of foreign investment was directed to the implementation of the project. For the construction of the plant, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ($197.1 million) and the OPEC Fund ($50 million) provided credit to "ACWA Power".
The main contractor of the project is the Chinese company "PowerChina Huadong Engineering Co., Ltd." (a subsidiary of the "PowerChina group").
The plant has the capacity to produce 1 billion kWh of electricity annually under optimal windy weather conditions. As a result, it is expected to save 220 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent the emission of more than 400 thousand tons of carbon gas into the atmosphere.
