Bulgaria: an unnamed force emerges

An early parliamentary election will be held in Bulgaria on April 19.

Medianews.az reports that this will be the eighth election since 2021. In 2021, three elections were held, one in each of 2022 and 2023, and two in 2024, none of which resulted in the formation of a stable government.

The Bulgarian parliament, elected by a proportional system (by party lists), consists of 240 deputies. To form a government, 121 mandates are required.

The political force led by former president Rumen Radev is considered a likely winner in the April 19 election. Rumen Radev, who was elected president in 2016 and 2021, resigned on January 19, 2026, and on January 23, Vice President Iliyana Yotova took office as president.

According to recent opinion polls, Rumen Radev's unnamed political force is ahead of the GERB Party and the Union of Democratic Forces, the Continuity Party of Innovations and the Democratic Bulgaria Party, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the Revival Party, and the Socialist Party.
