Baku Court for Serious Crimes sentenced political scientist Ərəstun Oruclu, who lives in the USA, to 8 years of imprisonment.
The verdict in absentia was issued on February 19.
Ərəstun Oruclu was found guilty of mass riots and calls against the state.
On February 23, 2025, Binəqədi District Court chose a pretrial detention measure in absentia for him.
According to the indictment, the political scientist made explicit calls on internet channels on January 4, 2023, and October 24, 2024, promoting the use of force against the Azerbaijani government.

He is a graduate of Azerbaijan Medical University.
He worked at the Ministry of National Security.
He was head of the Main Department for the Protection of State Secrets in the Press and Other Mass Media under the Cabinet of Ministers.
Later, he held responsible positions in the non-governmental sector.
He has been living in the USA for several years.
