How harmful is dust to our health? – Doctor's EXPLANATION

Dusty weather conditions are observed in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. Currently, the amount of dust in the air is 1.4-1.7 times above the norm. The reason is the strong northwest wind that started this morning spreading dust masses formed on the dry surface of the ground to surrounding areas.

How does dusty air affect human health?

Therapist Günay Latifova Medianews.az stated that dusty air primarily negatively affects people suffering from respiratory system diseases (chronic problems) or acute allergies: “Because the dust on trees or dirty residues in the soil circulating in the air triggers allergic reactions. In such cases, we recommend that these individuals stay in places where the air is cleaner, use medical masks and protect themselves. Allergic reactions may sometimes appear mild, but if a person experiences an allergic shock – which can occur even from a small cause – the situation can worsen sharply and reach an uncontrollable stage. Therefore, caution is necessary.

As for other individuals, they should also protect themselves from eye inflammation. Because dirty particles circulating in the air during dusty weather conditions cause an increase in problems mainly in the eyes and respiratory tract.”

The doctor noted that upon returning home, first and foremost hands should be washed well, then the face and eyes, and the respiratory tract, at least the nose, should be cleaned: “It should not be forgotten that the year consists of 4 seasons, and each season has its positive and negative sides and certain challenges. The body should be prepared in advance for all types of weather conditions – whether high temperature or such dusty air. If people recognize their sensitivities in their health and take appropriate measures, no problem will arise.

However, if the condition worsens, for example, if an acute allergic reaction or shortness of breath occurs, it is necessary to see a doctor. This is especially relevant for asthma patients. If allergic symptoms persist for more than 1-2 hours, specialist examination is essential.”
