Why is Azerbaijan suspending interparliamentary relations with Europe? – The head of the Azerbaijani delegation at Avronest SPOKE

Deputy Tahir Mirkishili commented on the decision of the Milli Majlis to suspend cooperation relations with the European Parliament in all directions, to cease participation in the activities of the European Union-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and to initiate the procedural rules for terminating membership in Euroneast (Avronest).

T. Mirkishili is the chairman of the Milli Majlis Economic Policy, Industry and Entrepreneurship Committee and the head of the Azerbaijani delegation in the Euroneast Parliamentary Assembly.

In his statement to Medianews.az, he said that the Milli Majlis adopted the aforementioned decision in response to the destructive activities of the European Parliament against Azerbaijan.

“The adoption of this decision was caused by the destructive activities or inactivity of the European Parliament,” said T. Mirkishili, listing the following:

- The European Parliament, departing from the principles of international law and justice, has long demonstrated a biased and destructive stance against Azerbaijan.

- It has been indifferent to the events that occurred during the Armenian occupation period, and the rights of refugees and internally displaced persons.

- The Azerbaijan-EU parliamentary cooperation platforms have turned into tools for political pressure and interference.

- After the 44-day war, especially on the eve of COP29, it increased campaigns and biased resolutions against Azerbaijan.

- These activities hinder peace and stability in the region and encourage revisionist forces.

“Despite repeated calls from us, the Milli Majlis, for the European Parliament to give up this destructive stance, no results have been achieved,” said T. Mirkishili, emphasizing that essentially the decision of the Milli Majlis envisions a complete freezing of inter-parliamentary relations with the European Parliament and withdrawal from cooperation mechanisms: “We hope that someday the European Parliament will turn into a place where constructive approaches and international values prevail.”
