"Europe is trying to protect Armenia, Russia may resort to harsher measures" - Political scientist

“The European Union clearly shows that it is ready to protect Yerevan from Moscow's pressures not only with political statements but also with concrete economic and security support.” Political analyst Aydin Tagiyev said so in an interview with Medianews.az.

He stated that a new phase of the geopolitical course is about to begin in Armenia: “The European Union's broad support package is aimed at freeing Armenia from dependence on Russia – dependence on imports and trade. This can be read as a response to the restrictions imposed by Moscow through ‘Rosselkhoznadzor.’

Here, cooperation in combating cyberattacks, controlling financial flows, and in the field of security brings Armenia closer to Western standards. This is also intended to balance Russia's informational and financial influence. I believe that this decision by the European Union is part of a complex strategy aimed at distancing Armenia from Russia not only economically but also politically and in terms of security.

This creates a new power balance in the South Caucasus. Armenia is taking a course toward closer integration with Europe, as a result, Russia may resort to tougher leverage to avoid losing its influence.”
