Sudden crying and irritability: How does the brain change during menstruation?

Sudden irritability, sensitivity, and desire to cry in women before menstruation are related not only to emotions but also to hormones and brain chemistry.

Medianews.az reports that specialists warn about this.

During this period, changes in estrogen and progesterone hormones affect substances in the brain that regulate mood, such as serotonin. As a result, some women experience stronger irritability, sensitivity, and emotional fluctuations.

Specialists state that during this period the brain's system that controls emotions becomes more sensitive. For this reason, even daily events can be perceived as more severe — small words can cause hurt feelings, intolerance to noise, and episodes of crying without reason may occur.

At the same time, physical symptoms such as bloating, headache, fatigue, and sleep disturbances before menstruation further intensify the emotional state.

Doctors emphasize that these changes should not be considered as "exaggerated reactions." In some cases, when symptoms are severe, specialist support may be needed.
