In the USA, a young mother left her two young children in a parked car and went to a beauty salon. Her 1-year-old son died from heat inside the car.
Medianews.az reports that the mother was sentenced to 15 years in prison for causing the death of her child.
20-year-old Maya Hernandez faced court regarding the incident that took place in Bakersfield, California. She accepted the charge of involuntary manslaughter in exchange for the dismissal of the first-degree murder charge.
According to the investigation materials, the incident occurred on June 29, 2025. Hernandez went to the beauty salon to get lip fillers while leaving her 1-year-old son, Amilio Gutierres, and her 2-year-old other child in the car, strapped into child seats.
About two hours later, the mother returned to the car and found the 1-year-old baby unconscious. Although the child, whose body temperature had reached 41 degrees, was taken to the hospital, it was not possible to save his life. The 2-year-old child in the car was reported to have survived.
During the investigation, it was revealed that although the car’s air conditioner was on, the safety system automatically turned off the engine about an hour later. As a result, the children stayed in the hot car for a long time. The temperature in the area was about 38 degrees on the day of the incident.
After the court decision, the baby’s father stated that the 15-year prison sentence was not enough and said that justice was not fully served.
