Meningitis has spread in a nightclub in the city of Canterbury, located in the county of Kent, England. Meningitis is a dangerous inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord caused by infection or other reasons.
According to Medianews.az, based on initial information, 15 people have been infected and 2 have died.
Authorities state that the infection is related to the "Club Chemistry" nightclub, frequently visited by students.
A 21-year-old law student, Annabel Mackey, fell ill after her birthday and was hospitalized. She was diagnosed with meningitis B. The young woman lost her eyesight and has difficulty moving as a result of the disease.
It was reported that among the infected is a 9-month-old baby, who is receiving treatment in intensive care. Additionally, several infection cases have been recorded in schools.
Following the outbreak, emergency measures have been taken at universities: exams are being held online, and vaccination of thousands of students is planned.
Experts describe the speed of the spread as unusual. Officials advised students to avoid close contact and not to share alcoholic drinks or electronic cigarettes.
It is reported that students’ intercity movement during the holiday days increases the risk of the disease spreading across the country. Currently, the source is being investigated, and prophylactic treatment is being applied to those in contact.
