In the USA, a 56-year-old woman lost her life after falling into an open manhole on the street.
Medianews.az reports that the incident occurred in the Manhattan area of New York City.
According to police information, the deceased was identified as Donike Gocay, who lived in the Briarcliff Manor area of New York State. On Monday evening, while getting out of her car, she suddenly fell into an open manhole.
Although people nearby tried to help the woman, the depth of the manhole complicated the rescue efforts. According to witnesses, there was no protective barrier around the manhole at the scene of the incident.
The woman was immediately taken to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her life.
During the investigation, it was found that the manhole belonged to an underground shaft housing electrical equipment. According to city regulations, such manholes must be kept closed or secured for safety purposes.
According to a statement by the electricity supply company "Con Edison," surveillance camera footage showed that the manhole cover was displaced approximately 12 minutes before the incident due to a heavy load vehicle passing over it.
An investigation is ongoing regarding the incident.
