Children under 5 years old are in the highest risk group: hand, foot and mouth disease

One of the viral infections frequently encountered in children, hand, foot, and mouth disease has spread in recent years. The disease mainly occurs due to the Coxsackie virus and other enteroviruses.

Medianews.az reports that it is observed more often especially in children under 5 years old.

The disease begins with mild fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite, followed by painful sores in the mouth. In the subsequent stage, rashes appear on the hands, feet, and sometimes on the thigh area.

The virus has a fast-spreading characteristic: it can easily infect through saliva, nasal discharge, contact with stool, especially in kindergartens and schools. Frequent hand washing, cleaning of toys and common surfaces, and keeping sick children at home prevent the infection.

There is no specific treatment for the disease; the main goal is to ensure the child’s comfort. Antibiotics are not effective; the main treatment is fever reducers, sufficient fluid intake, and alleviation of mouth sores.

5 main recommendations for parents:

  1. Give the child plenty of fluids;
  2. Avoid sour and hard foods that increase mouth sores;
  3. Choose soft and warm foods;
  4. Stay away from unnecessary antibiotic use;
  5. Do not apply treatment without doctor's advice.
