On February 8, elections will be held for the lower house of the Japanese parliament.
Medianews.az reports that of the 465 members of the House of Representatives, 176 members receive mandates by proportional representation (according to party lists), and 289 members are elected by majoritarian system (from constituencies).
The 248-member upper house – the House of Councillors – is also elected by a mixed system.
Japan is a constitutional monarchy. Since 2019, Emperor Naruhito has been reigning. The government in the country is formed based on the balance of power in the parliament. The current coalition formed by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Innovation Party is in the minority in both houses. Therefore, the lower house was dissolved on January 23, and a snap election was scheduled.
Since October 21, 2025, Sanae Takaichi, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, has been the prime minister. Born in 1961, Sanae Takaichi previously held the positions of Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications and State Minister for Economic Security in previous governments.
