Will Ramiz Mehdiyev lose his orders? – EXPLANATION

Member of the Security Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan, actual state counselor, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev is accused of serious crimes such as forcibly seizing or retaining power, treason against the state, and legalization of property obtained through criminal means in large amounts. By the decision of the Sabail District Court, a preventive measure of 4 months of house arrest has been chosen for him. The investigation is ongoing.

Medianews.az reminds that Ramiz Mehdiyev was the head of the Presidential Administration (called the Presidential Executive Office until 2009) from 1995 until October 23, 2019, and from October 23, 2019, until February 19, 2022, he was the president of the National Academy of Sciences. At various times, he has been awarded Azerbaijan's high state honors - the “Heydar Aliyev”, “Istiglal” (Independence), “Shohrat” (Glory), and “Sheref” (Honor) orders.

If the accusations against Ramiz Mehdiyev are proven and a court verdict is issued based on these accusations, can he be deprived of the orders he was awarded?

Legal expert Akram Hasanov answered Medianews.az's question as follows:

“If there will be a court verdict against him, then Ramiz Mehdiyev can also be deprived of the orders and medals. He has been charged with very serious accusations. These accusations are directly related to the country’s security. A person whose guilt in committing such serious crimes is proven cannot continue to wear the state’s high orders and medals.”
