Former beauty queen Carolina Flores Gomez was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in her apartment in Mexico City.
Medianews.az citing Ajans.az reports that investigators have focused their primary suspicion on her mother-in-law.
The city prosecutor's office has classified the incident as a deliberate murder and investigations are ongoing.
According to information, Gomez was the winner of the "Miss Teen Universe" contest held in Baja California in 2017. It is believed that she was shot and killed on April 15. Her husband Alejandro Gomez and mother Erika Maria were also at home during the incident.
One notable point is that the shooting was officially recorded only the following day — April 16. This delay has caught the attention of law enforcement agencies and raised additional questions.
Carolina Flores Gomez was born on April 4, 1999, in Ensenada city and had celebrated her birthday shortly before her death.
State Governor Marina del Pilar stated that investigating the criminal case is a priority: "No crime against women should go unpunished. We offer condolences to the family during this difficult time."
The incident occurred amid rising cases of violence against women in the country and dissatisfaction regarding the lack of justice for such crimes. Representatives of civil society are demanding the reclassification of the crime as femicide — that is, a gender-based killing.
