Putin's closest ally resigned – Is there a Kremlin game behind Kozak's departure?

Deputy Head of the Russian Presidential Administration Dmitry Kozak submitted his resignation over the weekend. This was reported by RBC citing sources familiar with the decision. It is stated that Kozak will soon bid farewell to the team and is considering various proposals related to transitioning into business.

Musavat.com reports that Dmitry Kozak has been one of the closest figures around President Vladimir Putin for years. He has acted as the Kremlin’s most trusted mediator in sensitive processes in Ukraine, Karabakh, and the post-Soviet space. It is precisely for this reason that his sudden resignation has raised serious questions within the Moscow elite.

According to the official version, Kozak is reviewing business offers. However, analysts note that the transition of high-ranking officials into business is a common occurrence in Russia and is often viewed as a political maneuver.

Former Administration head Alexander Voloshin, after working within the Kremlin team, led the boards of major corporations – RAO "UES Russia" and "NorNickel". Another example is Alexey Kudrin: after his post as head of the Accounts Chamber, he continued his activity as a corporate advisor at "Yandex".

According to the Musavat.com author, Kozak's departure is not just a "transfer to business" but may also indicate a shift in the balance of power within the Kremlin. Putin, having lost a long-time comrade-in-arms, is in fact managing this process himself. Thus, the sidelining of one of the Kremlin’s most trusted cadres is regarded as the beginning of a new era in Moscow's political system.
