Washington and Kyiv discussed the achievement of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in March.

It is reported that according to the scheme discussed during the talks between the USA and Ukraine, any agreement reached will be put to a referendum in Ukraine. It is noted that US and Ukrainian officials discussed the possibility of holding elections and a referendum in May.
According to sources, as the interim elections scheduled for November approach, US President Donald Trump is very likely to focus more on domestic matters, which indicates less time for Americans involved in the talks.
However, several sources familiar with the course of the talks consider the proposed schedule unrealistic. It is stated that Ukraine's election authorities predict that organizing elections under current conditions will take approximately 6 months.
Kyiv demands a ceasefire during the election campaign period to preserve the integrity of the referendum, but there is also a history of the Kremlin breaking its promises to halt combat operations.
"Ukraine's position is that nothing can be agreed upon unless the USA and its partners provide security guarantees for Ukraine," said the source.
According to information, Zelensky is open to the idea of holding elections in the near future. Nevertheless, the main obstacle to the restoration of peace in Ukraine shortly is the lack of clarity regarding the fate of the Donbas region.
