Moldova: the speaker remained, the factions were formalized

Igor Grosu, the leader of Moldova's ruling Party of Action and Solidarity, has been re-elected as the speaker of the parliament. The voting took place on October 22.

Medianews.az reports that Igor Grosu, born in 1972, has been serving as the speaker of the legislative body since July 29, 2021.

At the first session of the newly elected parliament on September 28, factions were also formed: the Party of Action and Solidarity, affiliated with President Maia Sandu, holds 55 seats in the 101-seat legislative body; the Socialist Party 17; the Communist Party and the Alternative Bloc each have 8; Our Party and the Home Democracy Party each have 6 mandates; and 1 member is non-affiliated.

In the country, the government is formed by the party holding more than half of the mandates in the legislative body. Since February 16, 2023, Dorin Recean, supported by the Party of Action and Solidarity, has been prime minister. He is expected to be replaced by Alexandru Muntian.

The Party of Action and Solidarity advocates for Moldova's close integration with the West. Maia Sandu was elected president in the nationwide elections of 2020 and 2024.
