Advertising scandal at "Meta": Fraud has been overlooked for the sake of profit.

Internal documents of "Meta" have revealed that the company earns billions of dollars annually from China-originated fraudulent advertisements.

Medianews.az reports that according to the information, "Meta" has prioritized protecting advertising revenues over user safety.

According to the documents, out of approximately 18 billion dollars earned from Chinese advertisers in 2024, more than 3 billion dollars came from fraudulent, illegal gambling, pornography, and ads violating platform rules. Although China is officially banned on "Meta" platforms, allowing Chinese companies to advertise to foreign users has increased this revenue.

According to Reuters' investigation, China is the largest source of fraudulent advertisements on "Meta" platforms. Such ads account for about a quarter of the total volume globally. Victims include those in Taiwan who purchased fake medical products, and those who lost money in investment scams in the USA and Canada.

Although "Meta" created a special team against China-originated fraud at the beginning of 2024, these activities were later halted and restrictions removed. As a result, by mid-2025, the share of banned ads increased again, reaching 16 percent.

US law enforcement agencies announced in March 2025 the seizure of assets worth 214 million dollars related to China-centered investment frauds. The "Meta" leadership states that the fight against fraud continues worldwide.
