Instagram will stop end-to-end encryption (E2EE) starting from May 8.
Medianews.az reports that Meta has called on users to save their encrypted messages and other content before deletion.
End-to-end encryption is a privacy technology that ensures only the sender and receiver can access messages and files. This system is also applied on platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, Signal, X, and Telegram. On Instagram, it protected text messages, photos, videos, as well as voice and video calls.
After the change, Meta advises users to download their encrypted messages, photos, and videos; otherwise, all data will be deleted. The company has not explained the reason for the decision.
End-to-end encryption has long been a subject of discussion. Its advantage is protecting the privacy of personal correspondence, while its drawback is making investigations related to crime and child abuse by law enforcement agencies more difficult.
