Hygiene in animal markets – What are the possible risks?

Recently, sanitation and control issues in animal markets have once again come to the forefront. According to Medianews.az, based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), poor hygiene and veterinary control in such markets can pose serious health risks.

According to experts, animal markets that do not comply with hygienic rules can cause the spread of zoonotic diseases – that is, infections transmitted from animals to humans. This creates not only a local but also a global health threat.

It has been stated that regular cleaning of market areas, conducting disinfection, and proper management of waste are among the basic conditions. At the same time, it is considered important that only healthy animals are put up for sale and that sick animals are immediately isolated.

Experts also note that workers' use of protective equipment, adherence to hand hygiene, and conducting slaughtering processes under controlled conditions can minimize risks.

Limiting the sale of wild animals and not keeping different types of animals together are also indicated as important safety measures. Additionally, regular veterinary and sanitary inspections allow for the early detection of diseases.

According to experts, failure to adhere to these rules can lead to serious consequences for both public health and food safety.
