The Georgian National Olympic Committee announced fencer Sandro Bazadze and judoka Eter Liparteliani as the best athletes of Georgia for 2025. Bazadze won the gold medal in the World Fencing Championship for the first time in his career, and Liparteliani became the first female athlete in Georgia's history to win a gold medal in the World Judo Championship.
According to sports disciplines, the title of Georgia's best athlete was awarded to Tornike Shengelia, captain of the national basketball team.
This selection surprised many and caused dissatisfaction. Some individuals perceived it as disrespect to the 24-year-old footballer and his efforts.
Recall that in 2025 Khvicha Kvaratskhelia won the Champions League, French and Italian championships, UEFA Super Cup, French Cup, and Intercontinental Cup. Additionally, he scored goals in the finals of the Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup, was a finalist in the Intercontinental Club World Championship, and ranked 12th in the Ballon d'Or voting.
