The list of recipients of the FIFA Best Male Player of the Year award has been updated.
Medianews.az reports that Lionel Messi (Argentina) has 8, Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) 5, Ronaldo (Brazil) and Zinedine Zidane (France) 3, Ronaldinho (Brazil) and Robert Lewandowski (Poland) 2 awards.
These footballers have 1 award each: Lothar Matthäus (Germany), Marco van Basten (Netherlands), Roberto Baggio (Italy), Romário (Brazil), George Weah (Liberia), Rivaldo (Brazil), Luís Figo (Portugal), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Kaká (Brazil), Luka Modrić (Croatia), Vinícius Júnior (Brazil), Ousmane Dembélé (France).
The award, given since 1991 and jointly presented with France's "France Football" magazine from 2010 to 2015, is based on the opinions of national team head coaches and captains, as well as fans and journalists.
The biggest award in football is the “Ballon d'Or” award established by "France Football" magazine. From 1956 to 1994, the award honored the best domestic player playing in Europe; from 1995, it allowed for non-European players to be honored; and since 2007, the award has been given to the world's best football player.
Currently, the award is based on the results of a survey involving a journalist from each country ranked in the top 100 of the FIFA rankings.
