On June 7, a parliamentary election will be held in Armenia.
Medianews.az reports that to enter the parliament formed by a proportional system, parties must gather at least 4 percent, and blocks at least 8 percent of the votes.
The term of office of the legislative body is 5 years. The government is formed based on the results of the parliamentary election. For this, at least 54 percent of the parliamentary mandates must be obtained. In a parliament consisting of at least 101 members, at least three political forces must be represented, and at least one-third of the mandates must fall to minority forces.
The current legislative body elected in 2021 consists of 107 members. The Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract Party holds 69 seats in the parliament, opposition forces – the Armenia Bloc associated with former president Robert Kocharyan has 28, and the “Proud” bloc associated with former president Serzh Sargsyan has 6 mandates. Four deputies are independent.
Born in 1975, Nikol Pashinyan established the Civil Contract Party in 2013. In 2017, the “Way Out” bloc, created jointly by this organization and two other parties, won 9 seats in the parliament.
Since March 31, 2018, Nikol Pashinyan has led the popular movement in Armenia against then-President Serzh Sargsyan's intention to become Prime Minister. On April 9, Serzh Sargsyan’s presidential powers ended. On that day, since the country switched to a parliamentary system of governance, the executive authority was transferred to the Prime Minister. On April 17, Serzh Sargsyan took the office of Prime Minister but resigned on April 23 due to public protests.
On May 8, Nikol Pashinyan assumed the post of Prime Minister.
The snap parliamentary election held on December 9 of that year was won by Nikol Pashinyan’s “My Step” bloc, and the snap parliamentary election held on June 20, 2021, was won by the Civil Contract Party.
It is known that in addition to the ruling party, opposition groups (Flowering Armenia Party, Armenian National Congress, New Power Party, Strong Armenia Party, etc.) will participate in the June 7 election.
