The importance of Baku is increasing - MFA

As one of the greatest supporters of multilateral diplomacy and cooperation, Azerbaijan is always committed to contributing in this direction as an active member of the Global South.

Medianews.az reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has issued a statement on this matter.

Among the numerous achievements our country has gained in recent years in the field of multilateral diplomacy and cooperation are successful chairmanships of important institutions such as the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC).

Hosting international events of significance such as the World Urban Forum (WUF13), a meeting dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Islamic Development Bank, World Environment Day (WED26), and the CICA summit of heads of states and governments in 2026 once again indicates the importance given to multilateral diplomacy and cooperation, as well as the growing prestige of Azerbaijan as a reliable partner on the international stage.

Azerbaijan’s chairmanship and hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has been inscribed as one of the most successful events in the history of multilateral diplomacy. Azerbaijan continues to contribute to the implementation and advancement of the historic significant agreements reached at COP29, as well as to sustainable development and climate diplomacy, which have become active areas in our foreign policy. In 2026, the country is expected to host the Regional Climate Week for the first time.

At the same time, the importance of Baku city as a center for multilateral diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation is growing. Decisions have been made in just the past few years to locate structures such as the headquarters of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization and the Clean Energy Center of the Economic Cooperation Organization in Baku. Additionally, during a conference held in Istanbul in April of the current year, a historic decision was taken to establish the headquarters of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network also in Baku.

Azerbaijan is also an advocate of fair geographical representation in international organizations. Along with demonstrating a principled position in this regard, special importance is given to the representation of the Republic of Azerbaijan and its citizens in the elective bodies of international organizations. In 2025 alone, successful results were achieved for our candidacies in 14 important international institutions.

With its active participation in multilateral diplomacy and formats, Azerbaijan will continue to contribute to peace, security, and prosperity both internationally and regionally.

It should be recalled that April 24 is celebrated as the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
