Experts state that the intestines are considered the body's "second brain" and that 70–80 percent of the immune system is located there. Therefore, proper nutrition plays a decisive role in protecting the gut microbiome.
Medianews.az reports that dietitian Toral Shah has explained some foods that pose serious risks to intestinal health.
She stated that the microbiome ensures the breakdown of foods, absorption of beneficial substances, and defense against harmful pathogens.
According to her, it is recommended to consume at least 30 types of vegetables and fruits per week, fiber-rich foods, and a Mediterranean-type diet.
The expert also explained the main food groups that pose risks to intestinal health:
- Ultra-processed foods – artificial flavorings and additives disrupt the microbiome.
- Fried foods – saturated and trans fats negatively affect the gut flora.
- High sugar products – refined sugar increases inflammation risk.
- Artificial flavorings – although there are contradictory results regarding their effects, cautious use is recommended.
Experts emphasize that balanced nutrition is a fundamental condition for gut and overall health.
