Among the 26 political parties registered with the state in Azerbaijan, only one is led by a woman: Günay Ağamalı, who was elected chairperson of the Motherland Party on January 24, 2026.
The Motherland Party was established on November 24, 1990, and has been registered with the state since August 11, 1992.
Günay Ağamalı, born in 1983 and a deputy of the National Assembly from constituency No. 65 Salyan-Bilasuvar-Neftchala, is the daughter of the founder of the Motherland Party, the late politician Fəzail Ağamalı.
Fəzail Ağamalı chaired the Motherland Party from its founding until January 24, 2026.

Looking back at history, there was one other party in Azerbaijan that was led by a woman. Lalə Şövqət (Hacıyeva) held the position of chairperson in the Liberal Party she founded from 1995 to 2003 and later held the status of leader. The Liberal Party ceased its activities on June 24, 2023.
