The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) detained Claudio Tapia, the president of the Argentina Football Association (AFA), at New York airport after the World Cup final.
Medianews.az reports that this information was announced by Argentina's "TN" television channel.
According to the source, the association leader's and other organization members' computers and mobile phones were confiscated. Based on court documents, Tapia, the association's treasurer Pablo Toviggino, and businessman Javier Faraoni, who is reported to be connected with the AFA leader, are to testify in the court of the Southern District of Florida on July 30.
The incident occurred while financial and commercial operations related to the AFA are under investigation. It is noted that in recent weeks, there has been an active investigation concerning Faraoni and his spouse's purchase of at least four elite real estate properties in South Florida. The total value of these purchases exceeds 11 million U.S. dollars.
Additionally, the US Department of Justice continues its preliminary investigation concerning the finances of the AFA. The aim is to determine whether some of the funds moving through the US banking system related to this organization have led to crimes involving financial fraud. //report
