Abbas Abbasov: Ganja, Tashkent, Baku, Moscow…

Abbas Abbasov, the former first deputy prime minister, has been put on the wanted list within the investigation of the criminal case opened against Ramiz Mehdiyev, the former head of the Presidential Administration.

Ramiz Mehdiyev, accused under Articles 278.1, 274, and 193-1.3.2 of the Criminal Code, is under house arrest. At least three people have been detained in connection with this investigation so far: Chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (AXCP) Ali Karimli, his adviser Mammad Ibrahim, and Vuqar Mammadov (Tofiqoglu), the chief editor of the "Hurriyyet" newspaper, Hurriyyet.az website, and "Hurriyyet TV." Ali Karimli and Mammad Ibrahim are accused under Article 278.1 of the Criminal Code, Vuqar Mammadov under Article 182.2.4. Their detention period will end on February 13, 2026, the same day as the house arrest measure chosen for Ramiz Mehdiyev.

The investigation, based on the motive of an attempted state coup, is carried out by the State Security Service (DTX). Those detained are kept in the DTX investigation prison.

Medianews.az reports that Abbas Aydin oghlu Abbasov was born on August 4, 1949, in Kirovabad (Ganja) city (his father is from the village of Malibeyli in Nagorno-Karabakh, and his mother is from Ganja).

He graduated from the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute (Azerbaijan State Agrarian University) in 1971. The same year, he started his career as a veterinary doctor at the Republic Veterinary Laboratory. He served in the military between 1972-1973.

From 1973, he worked in the poultry industry of Absheron district as a veterinary doctor and workshop chief; between 1979-1982, he was the director of the Baku Broiler Factory; starting in 1982, he was the deputy director in the poultry farm in Uzbekistan; between 1983-1989, he was the deputy chairman of the State Poultry Industry Committee of the Uzbek SSR; from 1989, he was the chief director of Absheron Poultry Agrarian-Production Firm; in 1990-1991, he served as the first secretary of the Absheron District Party Committee and chairman of the Executive Committee of the District Council of People's Deputies.

In December 1991, he was appointed as a state adviser on agrarian policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Since 1992, he worked as the first deputy prime minister of Azerbaijan. In 2006, he was relieved from the position of first deputy prime minister.

He was a member of parliament between 1990-1995.

He was awarded the "Istiglal" (Independence) Order of Azerbaijan.

After leaving the Cabinet of Ministers, Abbas Abbasov has been living in Moscow, the capital city of Russia.

In 2012, he established an organization called the Russia Azerbaijan Organizations Union and has been leader of this organization known as the "Billionaires' Union" in Azerbaijan.

According to information, he has not returned to Azerbaijan since 2013.
