Children are more at risk of heatstroke in the summer - WARNING

Excessively hot weather during the summer months increases the risk of heatstroke in children. Experts advise parents to protect their children from the sun, especially during the hottest hours of the day.

Medianews.az reports that according to child health specialist Senem Tufan Dursun, because children's body temperature regulation mechanism is not fully developed, they are more affected by hot weather compared to adults. A lack of fluid in the body also increases the risk of heatstroke.

She stated that during heatstroke, symptoms such as high fever, fatigue, headache, skin redness, dryness, decreased urination, loss of consciousness, excessive restlessness, and muscle pain may be observed. In such cases, immediate medical attention should be sought.

The specialist emphasized that if heatstroke is suspected, the child’s excess clothing should be removed, the child should be taken to a cool environment, the body should be cooled, and ample fluid intake should be ensured. A body temperature above 40 degrees Celsius can pose a life-threatening danger.

The doctor recommended that parents avoid taking especially young children outdoors between 10:00 and 16:00. When necessary, light-colored, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats should be chosen, children should be kept in the shade, and they should consume enough fluids.

Additionally, sun protection products appropriate for the child's age may be used for babies older than six months. For babies younger than six months, the main protection method is to keep them away from direct sunlight, have them wear a hat, and use thin, long-sleeved clothing.
