On October 21, the sentence of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy begins. He will be held at the Sante prison in the capital city of Paris.
Medianews.az reports that Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to 5 years in prison on September 25. The Paris Criminal Court found the politician guilty of involvement in criminal conspiracy.
The criminal case against the politician who held the position of head of state from 2007 to 2012 started with the accusation of receiving financial support from Libya for the campaign during which he was elected president.
Born in 1954, Nicolas Sarkozy began his political career in 1977. He served as the mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine, was elected deputy to the lower house of parliament (National Assembly) four times, and held the positions of Minister of Budget Planning, Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities.
Nicolas Sarkozy, elected president in 2007, was defeated in the 2012 election and left the position of head of state.
Starting from 2014, the former president received real prison sentences of one year for various crimes. French law allows a person sentenced to less than 2 years of real imprisonment to serve the sentence at home, so Nicolas Sarkozy was not detained.
