Simple activity for the elderly improves psychological well-being

Regular gardening can significantly improve the psychological state of elderly people and reduce symptoms of depression. This conclusion was reached by Turkish researchers conducting randomized trials in nursing homes.

Medianews.az reports that the results of the study were published in the journal "Public Health Nursing."

The study involved 46 elderly people. Participants were divided into two groups: one group engaged in gardening once a week for three months, while the other group continued their normal routine without additional activity. Psychological status was assessed before and after the experiment using the depression scale for elderly people and the "PERMA" psychological well-being scale.

Results showed significant differences between the groups. Depression indicators significantly decreased among participants who engaged in gardening, and their psychological well-being levels increased. The effect was both statistically significant and evaluated as having a high magnitude.

The authors stated that even moderate regular interaction with plants can positively affect the emotional state of elderly people. In their opinion, implementing such programs in long-term care institutions is a simple and accessible method for supporting mental health./Oxu.Az
