How much water should we drink during the day? - Age-specific standards announced

Tea and coffee consumed during the day do not fully satisfy the body's fluid needs.

Medianews.az reports that experts warn about this.

Dehydration is not limited to just a feeling of thirst; it can cause headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, constipation, and urinary tract infections.

Doctors state that approximately half of the human body consists of water, and lost fluids must be regularly replenished.

What is the daily norm?

For most adults, 1.5–2 liters of water per day is recommended. However, age, gender, physical activity, and climate can change this indicator. Fluid intake is not only from water, but also from soup, milk, tea, and juicy fruits. Nevertheless, the main source is plain water.

Fluid needs by age

  • 4–8 years: approximately 1.2 liters
  • 14–18 years:
    • boys – 1.6–1.9 liters
    • girls – 1.5 liters
  • Adults up to 60 years:
    • women – 1.6 liters
    • men – 2 liters
  • Over 60 years: 1.6–2 liters

Experts indicate that as age increases, the feeling of thirst weakens and the risk rises.

Situations that increase the need for water

  • Pregnancy – approximately 2.3 liters
  • Lactation period – up to 3 liters
  • Sports and heavy physical work
  • Hot weather and high mountainous areas
  • Fever, vomiting, diarrhea

According to doctors, the simplest indicator is the color of urine: light yellow signifies sufficient fluid intake, while dark color shows that water should be increased.

Experts recommend making water drinking a daily habit and emphasize that water balance is vital for both physical and mental activity.
