Approximately one trillion dollars worth of food is wasted worldwide every year - REPORT

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the value of food lost or wasted annually worldwide reaches approximately one trillion dollars.

This corresponds to a volume equal to a large portion of global food production.

The report states that about one-third of the food produced worldwide is either lost or wasted. This volume could feed approximately 1.26-1.3 billion people for one year.

According to the FAO, about 14% of food is lost during production and logistics stages, which amounts to approximately 400 billion dollars. Another 17% is converted into food waste at the consumption stage. Overall, the economic loss is estimated at 936 billion dollars annually.

The report also addresses the dynamics of livestock product production. In recent decades, meat production worldwide has nearly doubled. Especially, poultry meat production has increased about sixfold since 1961. Significant increases have also been recorded in pork and egg production, while milk production has grown at a more moderate pace.

By regional division, Asia leads in production volume, followed by Europe. In terms of production per capita, North America ranks first. In African countries south of the Sahara, indicators have generally remained stable, with increases observed only in milk and poultry production in some states (oxu.az).
