BMW is entering a new era in automobile manufacturing. The German giant will begin testing humanoid robots at its Leipzig plant starting this summer.
The company's head of digitalization, Michael Nikolaides, called this technology the future of production. According to him, these robots, which have human dimensions and capabilities, can replace humans in any work area without redesigning the factory. The sharp reduction in the costs of robot technologies has accelerated this transition even further.
The AEON robots, developed by the Swiss company "Hexagon Robotics", have a height of 1.65 meters and weigh 60 kilograms. These artificial intelligence machines, operating in eight-hour shifts, can independently change their batteries every three hours. They have the capacity to carry loads up to 15 kilograms.
In the initial phase, the new generation workers will be engaged in assembling high-voltage batteries and manufacturing spare parts. For this reason, it is expected that the production of the electric "MINI Countryman" assembled in Leipzig, as well as BMW's 1st and 2nd series models, will involve extensive use of robot labor.
It should be noted that BMW is not alone in this field. Some time ago, the "Renault" company also introduced a similar robot named "Calvin," designed to carry heavy electric vehicle wheels.
