In a statement given yesterday by US President Donald Trump, it was noted that the US membership in a total of 66 United Nations institutions will be revoked. This will lead to a shift in global powers.
So, what changes could this bring about in the region?
Medianews.az reports that on the topic, the chairman of the "Modern Development" Public Union and political analyst Mubariz Goyushlu gave a statement to Ajans.az.
He stated that Donald Trump believes supporting international organizations is considered discipline. However, this should not be adhered to.
The US withdrawal from some top-level UN bodies will lead to the weakening of the liberal-international order. America's retreat may shake the mechanisms promoting values such as democracy, human rights, and freedom of the press. Because the main leading power here is the US.
The political analyst said that on the other hand, geopolitical vacuums will arise in the region. The influence of the US in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East may weaken. However, some states may fill these gaps.
As an example, the People's Republic of China can be cited. It is possible through structural, financial, and other institutions. Additionally, it is possible to achieve personnel dominance in UN institutions.
Mubariz Goyushlu noted that in Russia, security; in the European Union, normative power gaps; the rise in leadership claims of regional powers (Turkey, India, Saudi Arabia, Iran); and the role of regional organizations may increase.
The retreat of the US poses risks for developed countries. Problems may arise such as an increase in conflicts, a decrease in financial programs for peacekeeping forces, the emergence of debt dependency (mainly from China). Most importantly, other unresolved international problems may surface.
