New fare in Baku metro? - AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT WAS ISSUED

The statements made by Kamal Huseynli, the head of the financial department of "Baku Metro" JSC, in his interview regarding the tariff policy in the metro sparked discussions in the public.

His mention of analyses conducted on differential tariff models has increased concerns among passengers about a fare increase. Especially the potential implementation of tariffs based on distance and zone principles is widely discussed on social networks. Citizens are awaiting an official stance on whether the metro fare will change or not.

Medianews.az reports that in response to a survey by "Yeni Sabah" on this topic, "Baku Metro" JSC stated that a unified tariff model is currently in effect in public transport.

"Currently, a unified tariff model is applied in public transportation. At the same time, from a long-term perspective, analytical work is being carried out on alternative models with the aim of establishing a tariff policy that is fairer, accessible, and economically balanced. Within this framework, differential tariff mechanisms based on distance, zone, and passenger segments are being evaluated based on international experience; models applied by metro systems in various cities are studied, and their compatibility with local conditions is analyzed. The ongoing research is not at the decision-making stage yet, but their results will form the analytical basis for the future evolution of tariff policy."

It was noted that the ongoing research is not aimed at making any decision and serves only as a fundamental role in shaping future tariff policy:

"Currently, the analytical evaluation and conceptual discussion phase regarding differential tariff models continues. Based on the results of these works, forming decisions on possible models is envisaged at the next stage.

The process of regulating fares in public transport does not fall within the authority of Baku Metro."
