National Salvation Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan

June 15 - is the National Salvation Day in Azerbaijan.

In June 1993, the complicated socio-political situation in the country created a real danger of civil war in Azerbaijan.

The military unit No. 709 stationed in Ganja showed insubordination and declared that it did not obey the Ministry of Defense; the government sent military units to Ganja to suppress the military rebellion. However, as a result of ineffective policies pursued, the scale of the rebellion expanded and reached an uncontrollable level. The military units that raised the rebellion headed towards Baku, and those leading the rebellion demanded a change of government.

Realizing that it could not prevent dangerous processes that seriously created the grounds for civil war, the APF-Musavat government at the last moment turned to Heydar Aliyev for help. Heydar Aliyev, the prominent socio-political figure who was the chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR, accepted the insistent invitation of the people and the ruling circles of the republic and arrived in Baku on June 9. Taking upon himself the mission to save the country from the danger of civil war, Heydar Aliyev, putting his life at risk, went to Ganja and, as a result of the negotiations he conducted, prevented the expansion of the civil confrontation.

On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and with this, the next successful stage began in the recent history of Azerbaijan, which continues to this day. June 15 has entered the history of Azerbaijan as the National Salvation Day.

The date June 15 has been celebrated at the state level as a holiday since 1998 and is a non-working day.
