The reason for sleepless nights was bacteria.

The invisible cause of insomnia has been revealed.

Milli.Az reports that, according to doctors, sleep disorders may be related not only to stress or daily routine but also to bacteria in the intestines. Specifically, a decrease in beneficial gut bacteria can cause insomnia.

Sara McNellis, a somnologist at University College London Hospital, stated that there is a direct connection between the gut microbiome and sleep quality. According to her, changes in the composition of bacteria in the gut can disrupt sleep, and long-term insomnia can also negatively affect these bacteria.

A study conducted by Chinese scientists involving about 387,000 individuals showed that people with sleep problems have fewer of seven types of beneficial gut bacteria. In particular, the decrease in lactobacilli was notable.

The doctor explained that these bacteria break down dietary fibers and produce substances that play a role in metabolism and the gut-brain connection. Sleep deprivation promotes the growth of harmful bacteria and can deepen the problem.

Experts state that proper nutrition and gut health are as important as sleep regimen in the treatment of insomnia.
