Baku has been declared the "World Sports Capital" for 2026.

Medianews.az reports that on this occasion, on December 16, with the participation of state officials and representatives of the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES), the official signing ceremony of the "World Sports Capitals" commemorative plaque was held.

The title "World Sports Capital" was officially handed over from Monaco to Baku.

The head of the Baku City Executive Power, Eldar Azizov, stated that it is a pleasing point that Baku was selected as the "World Sports Capital." He said that as a result of the attention and care of President Ilham Aliyev, various sports are developing in all regions of our country.

Youth and Sports Minister Farid Gayibov recalled that Azerbaijan has hosted many international competitions. According to him, even more interesting competitions are expected in Baku next year.

The president of the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES), Gian Francisco Lupattelli, emphasized that Baku has always paved the way for the development of sports. He noted that this city has always been chosen for its quality sports facilities.

The "Sports Capital" project is a non-profit association based in Brussels under ACES, which annually awards cities from different continents with the title of "Sports Capital" and other sports-related awards. These titles and awards are granted based on ethical principles and serve the social integration of society, psychophysical well-being, and the enhancement of the quality of life. ACES is also a partner of the European Commission’s European Sports Week and UNESCO.
