Rheumatic fever, known as rheumatic fever of spring, is an inflammatory disease that usually develops after a streptococcal infection in the throat.
Although the disease is mostly observed in children and adolescents, it can also be found in adults. It appears a few weeks after an untreated or improperly treated throat infection.
Symptoms
Pain and swelling in the joints (especially in the knees, heels, elbows, and wrists)
Fever
Fatigue and weakness
Palpitations or chest pain
Skin rashes
Involuntary movements (rarely)
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of rheumatic fever is made through medical examination, blood tests, throat swab, and heart examination. Treatment involves antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and in some cases, long-term prophylactic treatment.
Home care measures do not replace primary treatment but may help alleviate symptoms:
Getting adequate rest.
Drinking plenty of fluids.
Applying warm compresses to painful joints.
Taking prescribed medications on time.
Eating a balanced diet, increasing fruits and vegetables.
Temporarily avoiding strenuous physical activities.
Consult a doctor if
High fever persists
Shortness of breath occurs
Chest pain or palpitations are felt
Joint pain is severe
If the child develops the above symptoms recently after a throat infection
Rheumatic fever is a serious disease that can damage the heart valves. Therefore, relying solely on home remedies is not sufficient; a doctor must be consulted for diagnosis and treatment. (axsam.az)
