The Erebus volcano in Antarctica continues to amaze the scientific world with its unusual geological features. This mountain, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, emits microscopic gold crystals along with lava into the atmosphere. The giant lava lake that has been active at its summit for decades causes the volcano to create different natural processes.
Demokrat.az reports that, as a result of research conducted by scientists, invisible gold particles were found in the gas emitted from the volcano. According to calculations, Erebus releases on average 80 grams of gold into the atmosphere every day.
The strong winds of Antarctica carry these precious metal particles hundreds of kilometers away. However, experts say that the gold mixes into the atmosphere in very small quantities and is dispersed over a wide area. For this reason, collecting this gold is not economically feasible, and mining activity in the region is impossible.
The wonders presented by the volcano do not end only with gold crystals. The hot gases emerging from Erebus’ depths melt the thick ice masses on the surface, creating unique underground ice caves. Scientists studying this extreme ecosystem have discovered dozens of different microscopic fungal species inside caves isolated from the outside world.
Thus, the Erebus volcano serves as a great laboratory for the scientific world with its geological and biological diversity.
