Celebrities remembered for their tragic deaths

There have been such well-known figures in the history of Azerbaijan's culture and art whose sudden and tragic deaths have shaken both the artistic community and their fans. Although these celebrities, who lost their lives due to accidents, heart attacks, serious illnesses, and unexpected events, are remembered for their creativity, their prematurely ended lives have not been forgotten for many years.

Nəzakət Məmmədova

Nəzakət Məmmədova, born on February 28, 1944, in Ganja, who left an indelible mark on Azerbaijani opera and mugham art, met a tragic end. The singer approached Karol Anatoli Ivanovich, a person practicing plastic surgery without a license in Sochi city, expressing her wish to be rid of the wrinkles on her neck. During the operation, the surgeon accidentally cut the carotid artery in her throat with a knife, leading to the singer's death. Nəzakət Məmmədova died from hemorrhaging. The fact that the doctor was ethnically Armenian raises speculations that this death might have been intentional. Subsequently, doctor Karol was sentenced to 9 years in prison for his act.

Vaqif Mustafazadə

Composer, pianist, founder of the jazz-mugham style, and Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR, Vaqif Mustafazadə was born on March 16, 1940, in Baku. Thanks to his assistance, Mustafazadə was loved not only in Azerbaijan but also abroad. His death was early and unexpected. He died on December 16, 1979, in Dushanbe while performing the piece "Waiting for Aziza" during a concert, as he suffered a heart attack on stage.
 
Şəfa Hüseynova

Born in 1975 into an intellectual family in Qaraqaya village of the Qaraqoyunlu district, Şəfa's life also ended tragically. The singer, who lived a short life, had sensed her death beforehand. Despite her family’s objections, Hüseynova, a singer, wrote many of her songs to her ex-husband after they married and divorced.

The accident that caused her death occurred in December 2005. On the way back from Saatly to Baku, the car Şəfa was in collided with a "Kamaz" truck. As a result, the singer's mother died, and Şəfa passed away after being in a coma for three days. Her brother Səxavət, who was injured in the accident, recovered after 46 days in a coma.
 
Aslan Hüseynov

Born on May 17, 1967, in Kazakhstan, the singer moved to Azerbaijan at a young age. He gained popularity in our country with songs like "Reyhan," "İgidlər," "Bulaq suyu, dağ havası," and "Of dədə." Aslan Hüseynov died on May 4, 2021, at the 60th kilometer of the Baku-Gazakh road in a collision between his "BMW" passenger car and a "KamAZ" truck. According to information, he had just returned from visiting his mother’s grave, who had recently passed away on April 26, before the accident happened.

Xanım Qafarova

An Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, theater and film actress Xanım Qafarova was born in 1967 in Baku. Many remember that the actress, who spent her 47 years of life in poverty, lived in an iron garage and spent her last years with illness. She became a favorite among audiences with films and performances like "Kənddən gələn var," "Adam ol," "Yuxu," and "Qaynana." Her family life was not very successful either. She hid for a long time from her close ones that she was her husband’s second wife. The actress had a daughter named Gövhər from this marriage.
Xanım Qafarova, who suffered from cancer, died on July 11, 2014, in that small room.

 
Arif Quliyev

He was born on May 16, 1950, in Ali-Bayramli city. The actor, whose acquaintance with art began with his appointment at the Mingachevir State Drama Theater, has a life story and a death that still saddens people today.

Raised in an orphanage, later 19 women came forward claiming to be his mothers. Arif Quliyev did not alienate any of them but also knew that none were his real mother.

The actor married a woman named Gülzar. First, his wife fell seriously ill, and later he lost his son Farid to tuberculosis. Arif Quliyev died on May 7, 2021, from coronavirus disease.
 
Tünzalə Əliyeva

Known to many as "Toppuş sister," Tünzalə Ağayeva was born on February 15, 1973, in Ganja. Her father was a worker, and her mother was a nurse. Tünzalə studied at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts in 1990 in the faculty of "Drama and Film Acting." Later, she continued to work in this field.
The difficult period of her life story began in 2018. The actress, who was diagnosed with cancer, underwent several surgeries and more than 60 chemotherapy treatments. She even thought about suicide because she could not endure the treatment. She died at the age of 49 on January 22, 2023, at the National Oncology Center. Her death was hidden from her underage daughter for some time.
 
Cabir İmanov

One of Azerbaijan’s well-known actors, a master of comedy, and a member of the "Parni iz Baku" KVN team, Cabir İmanov was born on June 22, 1976, in Baku. İmanov worked for many years both in art and in public service.

Cabir İmanov remains memorable for audiences especially for his role in "Məhəllə." The actor, who brought smiles to faces for many years, saddened everyone with his unexpected death. Cabir İmanov died on September 29, 2025, at the age of 49, due to a heart attack during a workout at the gym.
