Researchers at the European University of Madrid have determined that taking longer continuous walks is more effective for heart health compared to several short walks throughout the day.
The scientists conducted extensive analysis by correlating physical activity indicators with mortality cases and cardiovascular diseases. The study involved individuals who walked on average less than 8,000 steps per day and who, at the beginning of the research, did not have diagnoses of cardiovascular diseases or cancer.
During approximately 10 years of observation, 735 deaths and 3,119 cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, were recorded. The results showed that the form of physical activity is of great importance. The highest risk was observed mainly in people who limited themselves to very short periods of movement. In particular, walks lasting less than 5 minutes were associated with an increased risk of death and cardiovascular complications.
The lowest risk indicators were recorded in participants who regularly walked continuously for at least 15 minutes. In this group, the number of both deaths and cardiovascular events was significantly low. The authors of the study note that in some cases, very short walks may also be the result of undiagnosed health problems.
