Tragedy in Baku where 10 people died: The defendants appealed to the Supreme Court

The cassation appeal filed by the defendants found guilty in the case of the explosion in Baku that resulted in the death of 10 people and injuries to 23 others will be reviewed.

Medianews.az reports that the complaints of Taghi Ibrahimov, born in 1962, the actual owner of "Baku Wood Processing" JSC, and Toghrul Rzayev, born in 1992, who carried out administrative and economic management in the company, will be examined by the panel chaired by Judge Teyyub Mukhtarov at the Supreme Court.

The initial hearing of the court is scheduled for July 15.

Recall that by the verdict of the Baku Serious Crimes Court, both individuals were sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. However, by the decision of the Baku Court of Appeal, the Amnesty Act was applied to them, and their sentences were reduced by 6 months.

On January 15, 2024, a fire accompanied by an explosion occurred at furniture workshops located on the territory of "Baku Wood Processing" JSC in the Binagadi district of the capital.

Investigation revealed that Taghi Ibrahimov and Toghrul Rzayev, who should have complied with fire safety rules, negligently violated these rules, causing the death of 10 people, injuries to 23 people, as well as significant material damage to property and the environment. Additionally, Taghi Ibrahimov was found to have evaded paying a particularly large amount of taxes.

Based on the collected evidence, Taghi Ibrahimov was finally charged under Article 213.3 (tax evasion of a particularly large amount) and Article 225.3 (violation of fire safety rules resulting in the death of two or more persons due to negligence) of the Criminal Code, while Toghrul Rzayev was charged under Article 225.3.

It should be noted that Taghi Ibrahimov is the brother of Nazim Ibrahimov, the former chairman of the State Committee on Diaspora Affairs.//Telegraph
