Today marks the 142nd anniversary of the birth of the prominent public-political figure, one of the founders of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, and chairman of the Azerbaijan National Council, Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə.
Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə was born on January 31, 1884, in Novkhani village of Baku.
In his youth, he participated along with social democrats in the creation of the "Hümmət" organization. Having faced persecution by the tsarist regime, Rəsulzadə emigrated to Iran in 1909, where for a time he worked as the chief editor of the newspaper "İrane-nou," and after the constitutional revolution was suppressed, he emigrated to Turkey.
In 1911, he was admitted as a member of the Musavat Party and four years later was elected chairman of the Central Committee of the Musavat Party.
In 1918, together with Fatali Khan Khoyski, he officially declared the establishment of the first republic in the East. After the Bolshevik occupation on April 28, 1920, he was arrested. Soon after, by Stalin's directive, he was released from prison and taken to Moscow. Despite Stalin's insistence, he refused to cooperate with the Soviet government and left the USSR.
Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə passed away on March 6, 1955, in Ankara.
On December 24, 1992, the President of Azerbaijan, Abulfaz Elchibey, signed a decree "On the return to Azerbaijan of the family members of the prominent public-political figure Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə who were subjected to repression during the totalitarian Soviet regime and on solving their social and everyday issues."
On December 29, 1993, the President of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, signed a decree "On the celebration of the 110th anniversary of the birth of the prominent public-political figure of Azerbaijan Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə."
On November 22, 2013, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, signed a decree on the celebration of the 130th anniversary of Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə. Based on the decree, a series of jubilee events were held both within and outside the republic.
Also, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, President Ilham Aliyev declared 2018 as the "Year of the Republic."
President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on December 30, 2023, on the celebration of the 140th anniversary of Məhəmməd Əmin Rəsulzadə.
