Demokrat.az reports that coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen. This substance helps strengthen the stems of plants and makes the leaves take on a darker green color. In addition, coffee contains calcium and magnesium, which are important for plants. Therefore, instead of throwing away coffee grounds, it is possible to use them as an additional food source for the soil.
It is not correct to pour coffee directly onto plants. It must be mixed with water. The solution should be the color of light tea. Usually, it is recommended to add three parts water to one part coffee. Watering plants with this mixture once a week meets their water needs and nourishes the soil.
Coffee has an acidic environment. Because of this characteristic, it is more suitable for plants that prefer acidic soil. Flowers such as African violet, azalea, orchid, begonia, cyclamen, hydrangea, and rose respond well to coffee water. At the same time, this method is considered beneficial for blackcurrant and some types of berries grown in the garden.
However, not every plant reacts the same way to coffee. Coffee is not suitable for plants that prefer alkaline soil, such as lavender, peony, and honeysuckle. Also, it is not recommended to use coffee grounds for geranium and some lawn grasses.
Coffee grounds can also be used as a natural means against pests. Sprinkling them at the base of plants can repel some insects and ants. However, one should be particularly cautious with rose bushes. Because excessive nitrogen can have a negative effect on the plant.
