Warning from experts: Iced drinks can pose an invisible danger

Experts repeatedly warn about iced drinks widely used to cool down in the summer months.

Medianews.az reports that these seemingly harmless drinks can sometimes carry bacteria that may harm the gastrointestinal system.

In particular, some ready-made iced drinks sold in markets may pose a risk to children.

Although the consumption of cold coffee and various iced drinks increases with rising temperatures, experts state that products made under unhygienic conditions can cause serious infections and poisonings.

According to experts, the idea that ice does not harbor bacteria is incorrect. Ice made from non-chlorinated water, produced with unclean equipment, or handled with dirty hands can spread dangerous microorganisms such as E.coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and Norovirus.

Especially in summer, cold milk coffees are widely used, and storing milk for a long time in warm conditions and then cooling it again can create a fertile environment for bacteria to develop. This can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, and abdominal pain even in healthy individuals. The risk is considered higher for the elderly, diabetic patients, pregnant women, organ transplant recipients, and those with weakened immune systems.

According to studies by the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA), some ready-made iced drinks containing flavorings to prevent melting may not be safe for children under 7 years old. Children consuming several such drinks within a short period may experience serious side effects such as low blood sugar, severe headache, nausea, shock, and loss of consciousness.

Experts recommend not ordering iced drinks in places where hygiene is uncertain and using only drinking water when making ice at home. Following these rules can help reduce the risk of possible infections during the summer months.
